issued March 26, 2001 and the subsequent version
A18.1b - 2001, issued April 11, 2002 have been
totally revamped to permit independent use of inclined

already adopted this new safety standard.

ò Inclined
platform lifts have always been recognized
by ADAAG as a viable part of an accessible
route in an existing building or buildings
undergoing alterations. However, the outdated
ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators
and Escalators Part 20 required attendant
operation of inclined platform lifts.á This resulted in many questions about whether or not these lifts could be used for independent access in public buildings.á ASME
A17.1 Part 20 has now been replaced by
the new ASME A18.1a standard.
